CHAIRPERSON’S ADDRESS
“There are two powers in the world; one is the sword and the other is the pen. There is great competition and rivalry between the two. There is a third power stronger than both, that of the women”. Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a delight for me to welcome you to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) at The Global Unition 2014. The United Nations Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require attention.
The agenda of the committee shall be “Empowering the Woman-Easier said than done?-With special reference to the Secretary General’s Campaign-Unite for Women!”
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948, enshrines “ the equal rights of men and women” and addressed both the equality and equity issues. In 1979, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for legal implementation of the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. Described as an International Bill of rights for Women, it came into force on 3 September 1981.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the women of the society are in danger. The Governments of the world have been quite inefficient to control the violation of women and their natural rights. Every second, hundreds of women across the world are subjugated to violence. And, the tragedy is this crime is not concentrated in one or more parts of the world but is widespread across the globe, including countries that boast of women’s freedom and equal rights. The Secretary General adopted special means to bring about a change to this miserable condition of the weaker sex under the Unite for Women campaign. Nothing, however, has changed since then. The world is in chaos. At this point, you are the ones who can bring in a change. This committee shall have it all. From sexual harassment of women at workplace to trafficking, from domestic violence to forced sex, the committee shall have it all.
Here, a small introduction about your executive board is essential. I, Damayanti Ray will be your chairperson for the three days of intense committee at The Global Unition. I am a student of class XI, pursuing Humanities. I have been an avid MUNner for two years now and take immense pleasure in debating as well. I wish to pursue fashion designing as my career and would like to settle for politics in the latter part of my life. Ankita Saha, your director is also a class XI student, in the commerce stream. She is a very diligent student and promises to make sure that the rest of the executive board is in order. She’s the regulating factor in the otherwise insane board. Srishti Ray, your assistant director is the restless one who’s in to make a massive mark in this committee. An excellent chess player, she has a vast interest in chemicals and looks forward to taking up chemical engineering as a profession. Your rapporteur, Neha Rahman is a class X student in the science stream. She is marvelous with her facts and takes massive in music and graphical illustration. She wishes to pursue politics as a future career.
Shinjini Mukherjee, the Secretary General shall be a special part of the committee given the specialization of the agenda. She is a student of class XI in the Science stream. She is an experienced MUNer and excellent in debating. She has represented the eastern region at the national level at The Frank Anthony Memorial Debate after securing the runner up’s position at the regional level. She is attached with The Statesman Voices, an esteemed weekly and has been awarded by The Statesman for her remarkable work as a journalist. Needless to say, she wishes to become a great journalist some day and idolizes Arnab Goswami.
With the help of the Secretary General and this extremely talented Executive Board, I assure you that you shall experience no glitches but only a smooth and efficient committee.
Come, lets get ready to push boundaries and fight repression and violation. Because Together We Rise. Hope to see you soon in The Global Unition 2014. Best of Luck.
Regards,
Damayanti Ray,
